Frolicking Feet Sock

These socks wear like iron.  I am wearing one pair for my third year.  This is a real record for me.

Handspun Yarn Sock Pattern

Set of 4 double point needles, size 4

Size for adults 6-11

250 yards of worsted weight yarn (I use a yarn that I get approximately 4-5 sts/inch

Cast on 48 sts onto one needle.  Divide onto three needles (16 sts each needle) Join, being careful not to twist the stitches, and work in K2. P2 ribbing for 8" (mine are 6") or desired length, to form the cuff.

For heel, Divide 23 stitches onto two needles (12 on one and 11 on the other) and set these aside to be worked later for the instep.  Working on the remaining 25 stitches proceed:  Next row:    K1, purl to last stitch, K1.

To make heel:    1st row:    *K1, Sl 1, being careful not to tighten yarn behind the slipped stitch.  Repeat from * to last st, K1.

2nd row:    K1, purl to last st, K1.  Repeat these 2 rows for 2-1/4 inches.

End by working Row 1-----25 stitches are left on your needle.

To shape heel:

    Row 1:    P13, P2 tog, P1, turn

    Row 2:    K3, (Sl 1, K1, psso), K1, turn

    Row 3:    P4, P2 tog, P1, turn

    Row 4:    K5, (Sl 1, K1, psso), K1, turn

    Row 5:    P6, P2 tog, P1, turn

    Row 6:    K7, (Sl 1, K1, psso), K1, turn

    Row 7:    P8, P2 tog, P1, turn

    Row 8:    K9, (Sl 1, K1, psso), K1, turn

    Row 9:    P10, P2 tog, P1, turn

    Row 10:    K11, (Sl 1, K1, psso), K1, turn

    Row 11:    P12, P2 tog, turn

    Row 12:    k12, (Sl 1, K1, psso)--13 stitches left

To make instep:

Slip 23 sts onto one needle.  With right side of work facing and using the needle with the 13 heel sts, pick up and knit 12 sts along side of heel, inserting needle through knot formed by the knitted st at the beginning and end of each row.  Knit across instep sts.  Pick up and knit 12 sts along other side of heel.  Divide work so that needle 1 has 19 sts; needle 2:  23 sts (instep); needle 3: 18 sts.

First round:    Knit

Second round:    Needle 1:    Knit to last 3 sts, K2 tog, K1

                        Needle 2:    Knit

Needle 3:    K1,  (Sl 1, K1, psso), knit to end.

Repeat these two rows until 46 sts remain.  Work even until foot, from where sts were picked up from instep, measures 5-1/2" or desired length.

To shape toe:

First round:    Needle 1:    Knit to last 3 sts, K2 tog., K1

                    Needle 2:    K1,  (Sl 1, K1, psso), Knit to last 3 sts, K2 tog, K1

Needle 3:    K1, (Sl 1, K1, psso), Knit to the end

Second round:    Knit across needles

Repeat these 2 rounds until 18 sts remain.  Break yarn leaving a strand 8"long.  Graft toe.
